This page is meant as an informational resource and is provided as a service to our visitors.The purpose of this study is to obtain a quantitative characterization of enzyme systems involved in the metabolism of arachidonic acid and other fatty acids and to relate these systems to the lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase pathways. Specific attention will be given to the following: 1) studies of the microsomal fatty acid-peroxidase system; 2) effects of long-chain fatty acids on prostaglandin and leukotriene biosynthesis; 3) the metabolism of prostaglandin endoperoxide H2. The techniques which will be used include high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography, thin layer chromatography, enzymatic methods and spectrophotometric techniques. The specific questions to be asked are: (1) How is arachidonic acid metabolized in eicosanoid biosynthesis? (2) Is there a direct relationship between arachidonic acid metabolism and the cyclooxygenase pathway? (3) Is there an obligatory relationship between the metabolism of linoleic acid and that of arachidonic acid? (4) What are the physiologic implications of our finding of a long-chain fatty acid esterase in the microsomal fraction of cells?Why is it that the world’s best film festival, the Sundance Film Festival, always seems to find time to give the world a look at the new breakout comedy star of the year?
